7 year old Norwich Terrier

7 year old male neutered Norwich Terrier with acute onset of vomiting. What is your best guess as to the cause of the vomiting?

Findings

There is an enlarged small intestinal loop in the right ventral abdomen containing a round, gas-filled foreign object. Several small intestinal loops are enlarged, and others are normal sized. The liver, spleen, and urinary tract appear normal.

Mechanical obstruction of the small intestine by a foreign body (possibly seed).

Diagnosis

A large seed and plant material were removed from the jejunum at surgery. Recovery was uneventful.

  • Plant seeds often have gas filled central cavities, which can provide a clue to the cause of the obstruction on radiographs.
