Findings

The liver and spleen are normal in size and shape. The stomach contains a small amount of granular food material. There is segmental mild dilation of the small intestine, mostly located in the dorsal part of the abdomen. Several loops are fluid filled with fragmented gas patterns, and there is evidence of plication. The colon appears empty at this time. No abnormalities are noted in the urinary tract. Peritoneal detail is normal.

Differential Diagnosis

Likely foreign body obstruction, possibly a linear foreign body. Consider abdominal ultrasound to further investigate this finding if clinically indicated.

Diagnosis

A sock was defecated several hours after the radiographs were taken. Subsequent radiographs appeared normal with resolution of the plicated pattern. The patient had a history of repeated sock ingestion and was able to pass them without surgical intervention.
