6 year old Dachshund

Today’s case is a 6-year-old female neutered Dachshund with intermittent lethargy, coughing, and gagging. What are your findings?

Findings

There is an increased soft tissue opacity at the heart base causing rightward deviation of the trachea on the dorsoventral projection. The bronchus of the caudal subsegment of the left cranial lung lobe is displaced dorsally by soft tissue opacity. The heart and pulmonary vasculature appear normal. No abnormalities are noted in the pulmonary parenchyma.

Differential Diagnosis

Heart base mass causing displacement of the cranial lung lobe bronchus. The most likely diagnosis is chemodectoma. CT scanning is recommended for further characterization.

Chemodectoma The dog underwent radiation therapy, and her clinical signs resolved.
